Gender and career in academia
As part of the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee meeting at UiT
The presentation takes its starting point in the question: Why are we still seeing less than a quarter of female professors despite women make up half of students in most of social science? It highlights key factors shaping academic careers, including hierarchy between research fields, the distribution of service work, teaching, networking practices and gaming-strategies. This presentation draws on Mik-Meyer’s qualitative study of career trajectories, performance metrics and gender dynamics in academia, conducted in collaboration with Professor Margaretha Järvinen. The study is based on approximately 200 interviews with professors and associate professors from social science faculties in Denmark.
Following the presentation, Professor Mik-Meyer will dedicate approximately 15 minutes to address questions from the participants.
The presentation will be fully hybrid.
Please note that registration for the workshop is mandatory due to the limited number of available places. You can register on the linked invitation page here.
Both the presentation and the workshop will draw on insights from Professor Mik-Meyer’s four recent articles, which will be made available upon registration.
