Sacred Groves: The Mythological and Religious Dimensions of Environmentalism

Visiting scholar Jan Kozak from Charles University in Prague gives a lecture on the historical roots of environmentalism and its connection to religious thought.

When speaking about the environment and environmentalism we tend to be technical and rely on science, however, historical study of the roots of environmental thought and activism shows deep religious sources of the contemporary phenomenon. In this lecture we will overview the development of environmentalism from its origins in the 19th century till present time and trace the process of resacralization of nature which is inherent to environmental cosmology.
