FAQs about admission

There are 3 different application categories with different deadlines, and different requirements. It is very important to apply in the correct category, or your application may be rejected.

Rule of thumb: If you need to apply for a visa in order to study in Norway you are a non-EU/EEA applicant, we do not send visa letters in the EU/EEA or Nordic admission.

Non-EU/EEA:

• You only have a citizenship in a non-EU/EEA country and do not meet Norwegian language requirement
  
  

EU/EEA and Swiss:

• You have at least one citizenship, or a permanent residency, in an EU/EEA country or Switzerland and do not meet the Norwegian language requirement

• You have legal stay in Norway that lasts the duration of the programme, but do not meet the Norwegian language requirement
• If you have at least one citizienship from a Nordic country, and you do not meet the Norwegian language requirement

Nordic:

• If you have at least one citizenship, or permanent residency, in an EU/EEA country or Switzerland, and you meet the Norwegian language requirement
• If you have at least one citizienship in a Nordic country, and you meet the Norwegian language requirement
• If you have legal stay in Norway that lasts the duration of the programme, and you meet the Norwegian language requirement

Nordic applicants may meet the Norwegian language requirements with completed High School from their home country. Read about your country here.

UiT does not offer any scholarships or other forms of financial aid for full degree students. Information about other forms of funding can be found here.

The Norwegian Government made a decision to introduce tuition fees for international students coming from outside of EU/EEA and Switzerland, from the academic year 2023/2024.

No, all prospective students must apply for admission to UiT by submitting an online application on Søknadsweb. 

UiT does not evaluate if credits can be transferred to your studies at UiT before admission. Once you are admitted as a student, you can consult with your study coordinator about the possibility of transferring credits taken during your previous study.

Please note that for bachelor programmes and integrated master degrees you have to document sufficient Norwegian language proficiency, and they are not taught in English.

No, we never give a guarantee of qualification or non-qualification until an application is registered and then formally assessed.

The admissions office processes the vast majority of applications. If we are unsure whether the applicant's bachelor's degree can cover the admission requirement for the master program, we will receive an assessment from the academic staff at the relevant department. We encourage all prospective students to apply if they believe they fulfill the admission requirements.

If you are an non-EU/EEA applicant: No, you need to have completed your education within the application deadline, if the education you are completing is relevant to your application. We do not accept provisional certificates. Conditional admission is not possible for applicants that must apply for student visa, read more here.

If you are an applicant from EU/EEA: Yes, but only for admission to masters degree programmes. If you are completing your current degree after the application deadline and do not need a visa to come to Norway, you may be granted conditional admission to master's degree programmes, read more here.

No, as long as you meet the admission requirements, you are welcome to apply for admission, regardless of age.

Yes, it is not a problem if you have a gap between your previous degree and your new studies.

No, we do not decline your application because you already have another degree in the same field, nor will it negatively impact your application. 

Yes, you should upload your documentation to the online application portal, where you submitted your application for admission. Documentation includes diplomas, transcripts, English language test results etc.
Applicants from some countries are required to submit documentation in hard copy. Check if this applies to you here.

How to submit a successful application

An overview of the documents you need to submit is provided on our page for international admissions for undergraduates and graduates.

All applicants must upload the following documents:

• Copy of your passport, or EU national ID card
• Enclosure form
• Documents showing change of name (if this applies to you)
• Proof of sufficient English language proficiency
• Relevant educational diploma and transcript 
• All documents must be uploaded in their original language, an official translation into English or a Scandinavian language must be uploaded too. Self-translated documents, or AI translated documents, are not accepted
• Documents for programme specific admission requirements
• Proof of financial ability (only for non-EU/EEA applicants)

Yes, when you submit a new document, you will receive an automatically generated receipt.

It is also possible to check that your documentation has been uploaded successfully by logging in to the online application portal. 

​​In principle, the deadlines for submission of documentation are absolute, and your application for admission will be rejected if we do not receive the correct and complete documentation within the given deadline. This also includes the results of the English language test. If you know that you will receive important documentation after the given deadline, you must contact us, and we will try to find a solution.

You can delete documents right after uploading them, but it is not possible to delete documents when we have started processing your application. 

Yes, the general admission requirements (average grade requirements) stipulate the minimum requirements for admission.

If we recieve a large number of applicants that exceed the minimum GPA you will not be guaranteed entry even though you meet the minimum requirements.

If there are more qualified applicants then there are available seats in a programme, we have to rank all qualified applicants. Applicants are only ranked on the basis of their GPA, and not by statement of purpose, letter of motivation, personal interest, letter of recommendation, or work experience.

Some programmes have special admission requirements that must be met in order to qualify. The following are further specifications of some common misunderstandings regarding these requirements. 

Minimum 80 ECTS in a relevant field:

• Must be documented with a transcript of record that includes full course name, course code (if available), credit amount for each course, grade for each course
• Course description for all the relevant courses

Drivers Licence:

• Both sides of the licence are required

Relevant practical experience, must include:

• Start and end dates of the employment/activity
• Employment percentage or the number of hours worked
• Description of employment/activity

Motivation letter / Statement of Purpose:

• Only required for the master's in Peace and Conflict Transformation
• There are no guidlines for what to include in the letter

If you wish to apply for a programme or course taught in Norwegian then you will have to fulfil the Norwegian language requirements.

No. We do not accept DuoLingo English as documentation of English proficiency.

As a rule, no. As long as you meet the educational requirements specified in the country list provided by the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT), you will not be required to provide proof of English proficiency.
You can check the qualifications requirements for your country by following these steps:
1. Go to the GSU list on HK-dir's website.
2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, choose your country and select search.
3. You will now see the requirements for English and basic education under the search.

If you are submitting an IELTS test to document English language proficiency we require the overall band score.

• For admission to short programmes the current minimum score requirement is 5.0.
• For admission to bachelor degree programmes the current minimum score requirement is 6.0
• For admission to master degree programmes the current minimum score requirement is 6.5
• For master degrees: Some programs require that you have a score of 6.5 on all the modules - please check this under "Admission requirements" on the program website.

Please note: For some of our programmes you have to meet the minimum score for each module.

The test expires after two years from the test date. The test must be valid on the application deadline. 

Certain applicants are exempted from the requirement of English test in the GSU-list.

Non-EU/EEA applicants that applied by the deadline of November 15th, will receive the results of their applications within the end of February.

EU/EEA applicants that Applied by the deadline of March 1st, will receive the results of their applications within the middle of May.

Both non-EU/EEA and EU/EEA applicants that Applied for Master in Fine Art and Master in Landscape Architecture will also receive their results within the middle of May.

Congratulations! Welcome to our university. Please accept your offer in the application portal and start planning by visiting our website "After admission​".

If you are on a waiting list, it means that you were found to be qualified, but there are more qualified applicants than there are available seats. If you want to stay on the waiting list you have to accept the offer in the application portal within the given deadline. 

If you accept the waiting list offer you may be offered admission at a later date if a seat opens up.

You will not receive an e-mail if your waiting list number changes, you will only receive an e-mail if you are offered admission. If you are offered admission you have to accept the new offer within the given deadline.

If you are put on a waiting list you have the right to ask for grounds of rejection.

If your application is rejected, or if you are put on a waiting list due to limited number of available places, you have the right to ask for grounds of rejection and appeal the decision. More information on "How to appeal".
