🌐 Visa and immigration requirements for incoming exchange students at UiT

The table below provides a quick overview of the immigration requirements for most incoming exchange students.

If you are a citizen of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, or Sweden:

• ❌ No visa is required.
• ❌ No registration with the police is required.
• ✅ If you stay in Norway for more than 6 months, you must report your move to the 🔗 Norwegian Tax Administration.

If you are an EU/EEA citizen and your stay in Norway is longer than 3 months, you must register after arrival.

• ❌ No visa is required.
• ✅ Registration is required for stays longer than 3 months.
• ✅ Bring your passport or national ID card.
• ✅ Bring your Letter of Acceptance from UiT.
• ✅ Bring proof of health insurance (🔗 EHIC or private insurance).

🎓 A. Study Permit (most exchange students)

A Study Permit is usually required if:

• ✅ Your stay in Norway is longer than 90 days.
• ✅ You have been admitted as an exchange student at UiT.
• ✅ You have sufficient funding to support yourself during your stay.
• ✅ You are enrolled at a higher education institution that has an exchange agreement with UiT.
• ✅ As a general rule, you must apply for Study Permit before arriving in Norway: 🔗 Want to apply: Study permit - UDI (visa-free students and Erasmus+ students with valid Schengen residence permit, see the informaiton below).
• ✅ After arriving in Norway, you must register with the local police station: 🔗 🛂 Registration with the police, visa renewal, and part-time work after arrival in Norway | UiT

🧪 B. Trainee visa

A Trainee visa may be required from you if your stay consists of practical training that forms part of your degree programme.

• ✅ Your stay in Norway is longer than 90 days.
• ✅ You must be enrolled in higher education abroad.
• ✅ Your traineeship at UiT must be practical training as part of your study programme at your home higher education institution.
• ✅ You must normally be between 18 and 30 years old.
• ✅ You must have received a concrete offer of full-time employment from the responsible person who invited to UiT.

🔬 C. Researcher visa/strong>

This category is mainly intended for visiting researchers who already hold a master's degree and will participate in research activities at UiT.

• ✅ Your stay in Norway is longer than 90 days.
• ✅ You must have received an official / formal invitation letter from the rresponsible person who invited you to UiT.
• ✅ You must have sufficient funding to cover your stay in Norway.

✈️ D. Visitor Visa (stays under 90 days)

A Visitor Visa may be appropriate for shorter academic visits lasting less than 90 days.

• ✅ You must have an an official / formal invitation letter from the rresponsible person who invited you to UiT or Letter of Acceptance from the Incoming Student Exchange Team at UiT.
• ✅ You must have enough money to finance your stay in Norway.
• ✅ You must have valid travel insurance.
