Incoming exchange students: grants, financial support and budget

As an exchange student, you have several options for applying for additional financial support and grants during your stay at UiT. You should contact the International Office or the responsible person at your home educational institution to explore whether such support is available for you and how to apply.
Since some grants have specific application deadlines, it is advisable to begin investigating these opportunities early—preferably one year before your planned exchange at UiT.
Incoming exchange students from partner institutions are exempt from paying tuition and semester fees at UiT.
An estimate of a student’s cost of living is prepared and revised annually by the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund (Lånekassen). Your actual expenses will depend on your lifestyle and personal choices.
Their recommendation is that you need approximately NOK 166 859 for the study year 2025-2026 (August 2025 - June 2026).
This means you need to have:
- NOK 75 845 for the autumn semester in 2025 (August - December).
- NOK 91 014 for the spring semester in 2026 (January - June).
All figures are stated in Norwegian kroner (NOK).
Item | Cost |
Semester fee (only non-exchange students) | NOK 710 per semester |
Housing (incl. first semester deposit) | ca. NOK 33,000 (5 months rent) deposit before moving into the unit. |
Food | ca. NOK 21,000 (6 months) |

Winter clothing and shoes | NOK 4000 per academic year (depending on lifestyle) |
Transportation (under 30, above + approx. 40%)* | NOK 3,500 for one semester (Transportation costs are lower for Alta, Harstad and Narvik since the city centre or/and the student housing are situated close to the campus) |
Other expenses and living costs will depend on your lifestyle (gym subscription, Netflix, Spotify, medical expenses, alcohol, cigarettes, restaurants, recreations; trips, etc.) | NOK 7, 400 |
TOTAL (APPROXIMATIVELY) | NOK 80 000 |
