ENCODE seminar & debate: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Geopolitics

Peter Stuart Robinson will offer insights into the history and implications of a current resurgence of the term geopolitics in analyses of world affairs. After his talk there will be ample time for questions and debate.

Geopolitics isn’t exactly new, as obliquely referenced in the title and accompanying imagery. What is new, however, is its ubiquitous presence in the contemporary ‘global’ zeitgeist. Let’s reflect on this strange(love) phenomenon together!

I’ll get the ball rolling with a short presentation; Then we open for discussion. Here are a few of the questions on the table:

  • 1) What brought us to this point, culturally or ideologically, and where does it suggest we’re heading?
  • 2) What’s so compelling about this language for media and leaders, not least our own University’s?
  • 3) What are the effects of insinuating its ‘received wisdom’ into our programmes?
  • 4) How compatible (if at all) is the study of geopolitics with the study of peace?
  • 5) What are the various roots of geopolitics and how in/consistent are they?
  • 6) How is the ‘exploding’ popularity of geopolitics connected to the fractious period in which we live?
  • 7) Could geopolitics be dangerous? I mean really dangerous, to life and limb?

The seminar is an initiative of the ENCODE research group.
