Silvano Chue Muquissai defends his thesis at UFMT on original rights and demarcation of the Vila Nova Barbecho Indigenous Land

CUIABÁ (MT), May 15, 2025 – With a presentation marked by historical depth, legal rigor, and a strong commitment to Indigenous rights, student Silvano Chue Muquissai, of the Chiquitano people, defended his undergraduate thesis in the Law program at the Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT). Titled “Demarcation of the Vila Nova Barbecho Indigenous Land: Perspectives of Original and Constitutional Law”, the thesis was supervised by Professor Dr. Marcelo Theodoro and presented remotely on May 15.

Silvano is a member of the UFMT Indigenous Students’ Committee, president of the Local Indigenous Health Council Usinhanorich Putsiórch, and part of the international project ECO_CARE, in which he acts as a researcher, author, and co-author of several publications focused on environmental justice and the strengthening of the rights of Indigenous peoples.

The research was conducted in the Vila Nova Barbecho village, in the municipality of Porto Esperidião (MT), and aims to reconstruct the historical process of the Chiquitano people from the late 17th century to the present. The study investigates the violations of rights suffered by the Indigenous population, the illegal occupation of their lands by ranchers, and the urgent need for land demarcation as a tool for social and constitutional justice.

Silvano is also co-author of the book Tendiendo puentes hacia una participación ambiental eficaz: el camino de la co-creación en derecho – el formato multimedia chiquitano para la difusión del Acuerdo de Escazú (Multifoco Publishing House, 2023), and A história do povo chiquitano narrada pelo rio Tarumã: um conto jurídico co-criado com o povo chiquitano – edição pela América Latina (Multifoco Publishing House, 2024), a work that is part of the ECO_CARE project.

Silvano’s presentation was more than an academic act – it was a political and identity affirmation. His journey stands as a powerful example of resistance and commitment to the collective future of Indigenous peoples in Brazil and Latin America.

TITULO: Silvano Chue Muquissai defende TCC na UFMT sobre direito originário e demarcação da Terra Indígena Vila Nova Barbecho.

CUIABÁ (MT), 15 de maio de 2025 – Com uma apresentação marcada por profundidade histórica, rigor jurídico e comprometimento com os direitos indígenas, o estudante Silvano Chue Muquissai, do povo Chiquitano, defendeu seu Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (TCC) no curso de Direito da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso (UFMT). Intitulado “Demarcação da Terra Indígena Vila Nova Barbecho: Perspectivas do Direito Originário e Constitucional”, o trabalho foi orientado pelo professor Dr. Marcelo Theodoro e apresentado de forma remota no dia 15 de maio.

Silvano é membro da Comissão dos Estudantes Indígenas da UFMT, presidente do Conselho Local de Saúde Indígena Usinhanorich Putsiórch, e integrante da equipe do projeto internacional ECO_CARE, no qual atua como pesquisador, autor e coautor de diversas publicações voltadas à justiça ambiental e ao fortalecimento dos direitos dos povos originários.

A pesquisa foi realizada na Aldeia Vila Nova Barbecho, no município de Porto Esperidião (MT), e busca reconstruir o processo histórico do povo Chiquitano desde o final do século XVII até os dias atuais. O estudo investiga as violações de direitos sofridas pelos indígenas, a ocupação ilegal de suas terras por fazendeiros e a urgência da demarcação do território como instrumento de justiça social e constitucional.

Silvano também é coautor do livro Tendiendo puentes hacia una participación ambiental eficaz: el camino de la co-creación en derecho – el formato multimedia chiquitano para la difusión del Acuerdo de Escazú (Editora Multifoco, 2023), e do livro A história do povo chiquitano narrada pelo rio Tarumã: um conto jurídico co-criado com o povo chiquitano – edição pela América Latina (Editora Multifoco, 2024) obra que integra o projeto ECO_CARE.

A apresentação de Silvano foi mais do que um ato acadêmico – foi uma afirmação política e identitária. Sua trajetória representa um exemplo de resistência e compromisso com o futuro coletivo dos povos indígenas brasileiros e latino-americanos.

Silvano's thesis is set to be reworked and published as a scholarly paper in the near future.
