The Ocean Incubator Network Toolkit: Bridging Education and Sustainability in the Spaces of Earth Sciences
By: Giulia Busso and Giulia D'Alessandro
Viaggio verso un mare sano (“Journey to a healthy sea”) is an educational and interactive project designed to engage primary school students in an ocean-themed Game of the Goose, through which the main problems related to the overconsumption of ocean resources and water pollution are addressed. The aim of the project is therefore to raise awareness among young people—as consumers and tomorrow’s leaders—about the connection between ocean protection and the fight against hunger, helping them understand that the responsible management of marine resources is essential to ensure the continued and effective supply for the global population. The creation of the game took place in different phases: a research and design phase; a paper and digital creation phase of the project; a testing and improvement phase, through a classroom trial of the game, during which various feedbacks were collected.
The project was created by two students – Giulia Busso and Giulia D’Alessandro – during the Environmental Law course of the Master’s program in Georesources and Environmentally Sustainable Business Management at the University of Turin. Their different backgrounds, in Natural Sciences and Business Administration respectively, made it possible to create a project that combines environmental sustainability with social awareness. This interdisciplinary approach allowed them to address the issue of ocean conservation from both ecological and economic perspectives, ensuring the project’s relevance to a wide audience. By integrating scientific research with practical applications, the project not only educates but also empowers young minds to take action in their daily lives. The success of the classroom trial highlights the potential of such initiatives to inspire meaningful change and foster a deeper understanding of global environmental challenges.
The overall project background, rationale, methodology and concrete implementation is narrated in an essay developed as a scholarly paper in Italian, available here.
