Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen:

This thesis examines the Sámi movements' strategies between 1968 and 1990, focusing on the Sámi’s political and social advancements. In 1968, the Sámi were mainly viewed as a minority in the Nordic region. However, due to the international work and development, it concludes with Norway ratifying the ILO Convention No. 169 in 1990. Central to the thesis is the role of the Nordic Sámi Council (NSC) in advocating for Sámi rights, both regionally and internationally. The NSC sought political recognition through national and international platforms such as the United Nations and the World Council of Indigenous Peoples (WCIP), which they co-founded.

The thesis highlights significant moments like the Alta struggle (1979–1981), where Sámi activists used Indigenous rights arguments to challenge Norwegian policies on land use. This struggle unified the Sámi movement and brought international attention to their cause. Additionally, the Sámi women’s movement, established in the mid-1980s, confronted marginalization within both Sámi and Nordic women’s movements, marking a significant development in Sámi gender politics.
