This thesis explored suicidal behaviour among Indigenous adolescents in the Arctic – the Sami and Greenlandic Inuit, seeking to understand why some of these adolescents report suicidal thoughts or attempts. Data from two large surveys were used to study how the relationship with friends and family, negative experiences such as violence and sexual abuse, as well as cultural factors, affect suicidal behaviour. The findings showed that close relationships are important, especially among Sami and Inuit girls. Negative experiences impacted suicidal behaviour. Ethnic identity development and discrimination were associated with suicide attempts among Sami adolescents. To reduce the rates of suicidal behaviour among these Indigenous adolescents in the Arctic, culturally sensitive prevention efforts are needed that strengthen connections to the family and to the community.
