VIN&VITEN | The pickled library: the zoological collections
In the museum’s dark basement, hundreds of thousands of transparent jars of all shapes and sizes stand in silence. The jars are filled with alcohol, and inside them drift animals that once lived: frogs, fish, molluscs, and much more.

In the museum’s dark basement, hundreds of thousands of transparent jars of all shapes and sizes stand in silence. The jars are filled with alcohol, and inside them drift animals that once lived: frogs, fish, molluscs, and much more. Many of the species are identified and well known, while others are discoveries still waiting to be analysed and recorded. All are preserved for future knowledge.
In this event, we’ll take a closer dive into the museum’s zoological archive: What is collected? Why are animals preserved in this way? And what can they still tell us?
The evening begins with presentations in the café by Vanessa Pitusi and Andreas Altenburger, both working with the zoological collections at the museum. After the presentations there is a opportunity for a rare visit to the collection rooms (limited number of places, sign-up on the evening.)
A selection of jars from the basement is currently on display in “VitenSkapet” at the museum. Take a look – can you tell what has been preserved for posterity?
The event is held in English, but questions and comments in Norwegian are most welcome.
TIME Wednesday 14 January at 7:00 PM. Duration approx. 30–45 minutes, followed by guided visits in the collections for those who would like to (in groups, limited spots, registration upon arrival).

I museets mørke kjeller finnes hundretusener av store og små gjennomsiktige glass med lokk. Glassene er fylt med alkohol, og i dem flyter dyr som en gang levde: her finnes frosker, fisk, muslinger og mye mye mer. Mange av artene er identifisert og kjent, men det er også funn som venter på å bli analysert og registrert. Alt sammen bevart for framtidig kunnskap.
På dette arrangementet tar vi et nærmere dykk i museets zoologiske arkiv: hva samles det på? hvorfor konserveres dyr på denne måten? Og hva kan de fortsatt fortelle oss?
Kvelden byr på presentasjoner ved Vanessa Pitusi og Andreas Altenburger, som begge jobber med de zoologiske samlingene ved museet. Etter presentasjonene er det mulighet for et sjeldent besøk ned i magasinene (begrensa antall plasser, påmelding samme kveld).
Et utvalg av glassene fra kjelleren er for tida utstilt i «VitenSkapet» hos oss. Ta gjerne en titt – klarer du å se hva det er vi har sylta ned for ettertida?
Arrangementet holdes på engelsk, men det er mulig å komme med spørsmål og kommentarer på norsk.
