Arctic Frontiers - The Nordic Food Frontline: Resilience Through Production and Partnership

Food is security – and in the North, it’s also preparedness, rural development, and business. How can we ensure food on the table amid climate change, conflict, and trade disruptions? Join NIBIO and UiT - The Arctic University of Norway – at Arctic Frontiers 2026 for a practical, action-oriented side-event. We’ll share real-world examples, discuss collaboration across land, sea, and aquaculture, and explore how Nordic research can drive smarter, greener, and more resilient food production in the North.
The event is organized through Arctic Frontiers, so participants must be participants at the conference to attend. If you only plan to join the conference for one day, you can register for a daypass through Arctic Frontiers. You can find more info here.
More about the program:
Ivar H. Kristensen, Director General of NIBIO and a strong advocate for circular economy, will open the Side Event by showcasing how Nordic research collaboration can unlock new opportunities for Arctic food security. NIBIO drives progress in food safety, sustainable resource management, and innovation through cutting-edge research and knowledge sharing—creating value for a resilient, greener future.
Join researchers from Finland, Sweden, and Norway as they explore pressing challenges of Arctic food security and discuss how Nordic collaboration can drive impactful research to strengthen food security.
Dr. Anu Kaukovirta, Vice President at Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), is leading the area of production systems, aiming at resource-efficient, sustainable solutions and innovations for future agriculture, aquaculture, and forestry in Northern environment.
Sigrid Agenäs, Professor of Ruminant Management at SLU and Director of SustAinimal, focuses on sustainable livestock systems and animal welfare. Her research spans dairy management innovations, crop-livestock integration, and reducing the environmental footprint of ruminant production.
Hildegunn Norheim is Director of NIBIO’s Division of Survey and Statistics. She focuses on sustainable resource management and innovative tools to support climate, nature, and food security.
Discover hands-on examples of Arctic food production and how resource circulation contributes to more, smarter and greener solutions for sustainable food production.
Gjermund Bahr, Senior Advisor at NIBIO, connects aquaculture and agriculture by developing scalable circular solutions. His work spans nutrient recovery, converting fish sludge into energy and feed, and creating algae-based biofilters and green biorefining – strengthened through industry partnerships.
Jannik Traavik Mennen runs the micro-farm ‘Klauv og Rake’ near Tromsø with his partner Amalie. Specializing in no-till vegetables, they also raise cows, goats, and chickens, focusing on resource circulation for sustainable production.
Ida-Sofie Stryken, PhD Fellow at UiT The Arctic University of Norway and member of the Changing Arctic research school, explores community gardening in Northern Norway and Svalbard as part of her doctoral work community gardens within Norwegian Arctic foodscapes.
Join us for a journey through changes in the northern landscape with photographer and landscape geographer Oskar Puschmann, NIBIO. Puschmann has made documentation of landscape changes a lifelong work. Since 2002, he has rephotographed over 6,000 historical landscape photos, from the 1880s up to our own time.
