About the artist:

Knut Åsdam is a filmmaker, artist, writer, and professor of moving image at Filmkunstskolen i Kabelvåg/UiT. He studied at the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program (NYC, 1994–95), Jan van Eyck Akademie (Maastricht, 1992–94), Goldsmiths College (London, 1989–92), the University of Oslo, and the University of Hawaii.

Working across cinema, video, installation, sound, sculpture, drawing, photography, and public space, Åsdam’s main interest lies in the psychological, social, and economic effects of contemporary society, as well as the toll of everyday life on the body and in language. A defining characteristic of his work is its attention to place, along with a creative use of language and narration that produces a strong sense of subjectivity and historical time through form.

Åsdam adopts an open approach to filmmaking, merging documentary and fiction methods while frequently shifting conventions within each film. In his installations, he considers the experience of the work and its themes as a temporary process, focusing on movement, time, and the sensing and thinking viewer.

Åsdam has represented Norway at the Venice Biennale, the Istanbul Biennale, and several other biennials. He has held major solo exhibitions at Tate Britain, the Museum of Contemporary Art Oslo, the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, the Bergen Kunsthall Festival Exhibition, Kunsthalle Bern, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, and FRAC Bourgogne, among others.

The Rotterdam Film Festival presented a special focus on Åsdam’s work, including film screenings, installations, and public projects. Retrospective programs of his films have been shown at Tate Modern in London and International House Cinemas in Philadelphia. His work is held in several public collections, including Tate Modern, the National Museum in Oslo, KODE, Moderna Museet Stockholm, Kunstmuseum Bern, and FRAC Bourgogne.
