Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen/ Summary of the thesis:

Mental health reform moved care from large institutions to community settings. Most people with severe illness now live in their own homes or supported housing, see outreach teams or clinics, and enter hospital only briefly. For them, freedom and access have improved.
A forgotten minority, however, still ricochets between wards and short-term lodgings, sometimes ending up homeless or in prison—blocking beds and disrupting the care continuum. My thesis explores what recovery means to this group, how service gaps propel their instability, and how therapeutic relationships can steady or shake them.
Narrative interviews with repeatedly hospitalized service-users showed that recovery relies on several supports lining up at once: secure housing, dependable medication, regular routines, and—above all—enduring therapeutic bonds. When one piece slips, the rest often collapse, triggering another admission.
Quick fixes will not stop this cycle. What is needed are “holding structures”: well-staffed, municipally run residences and longer-stay hospital wards that bridge the gap between acute beds and ordinary flats, giving people the time and relationships required for sustainable recovery.
