Workshop: Supervising systematic literature reviews

A warm welcome to this workshop, which addresses a central topic that you will benefit from learning more about and discussing with other supervisors and experts in the field.

In this workshop, you will get some advice on what to familiarize yourself with in terms of methodology before supervising systematic literature reviews at the PhD level. Some of the advice is based on extensive experience with questions from students and staff regarding the supervision of literature searches.

Although literature searches often receive considerable attention, they are only a small part of the overall methodology that should be employed when conducting a literature review or a comprehensive systematic review. We will also touch on other critical methodological principles, reporting standards, and everyday practical challenges.

This workshop is offered as a voluntary part of the Development Program for PhD Supervisors (UNIPED-600) as well as part of the continuation program for PhD supervisors. It is also open to other interested employees at UiT The Arctic University of Norway.

We will take our 5-step method for developing literature searches as a starting point. This provides a reasonable basis for discussing the prerequisites for successful supervision of literature reviews.

Tentative schedule for the workshop:

 Preparation for the workshop:

Take a look at the examples at PhD/researcher level in our online resource for systematic and structured literature searches: https://en.uit.no/ub/searchhelp/systematic-search/phd-researcher   Check out the Supervisor-tile in the resource, in preparation for the discussion part of the workshop.  What do you think is most important to prepare for before taking on the role of supervising a systematic literature review?  Other aspects you think supervisors of systematic literature reviews need to be aware of?

Welcome!

We look forward to seeing you and to engaging in fruitful discussions!
