MUS-3905 Master project in music performance - 60 ECTS

Type of course

Obligatory course for students studying on the Master program in music performance. Cannot be taken as a stand-alone course.

If you pass the examination in this course, you will get an reduction in credits (as stated below), if you previously have passed the following courses:

Course content

Through a master's project of their choice, the student will specialize in one or several areas. Experience in music performance at a high level and reflection over their own artistic work will give the student a high degree of awareness of the processes and methods of artistic research. The master's project will be carried out with the principal instrument teacher, supervisor, and other musicians (accompanist, band/ensembles).

Objectives of the course

After completing the course, the student will have the following competences:

Knowledge:

  • advanced proficiently in analysing and discussing own artistic intentions
  • an advanced knowledge of repertoire, performance traditions, and artistic practice within the student's choice of specialisation
  • ability to apply up-to-date knowledge in artistic research to develop own musical perspective

Skills:

  • ability to create, realise, and convey own personal intentions at a high artistic level
  • ability to reflect over and justify choice of methods in the student's own artistic research
  • ability to plan and carry out artistic research

Competences:

  • high awareness of current quality standards within the student's principal instrument and specialisation
  • ability to analyse and critically apply artistic and academic research in own work
  • ability to identify relevant ethical questions and display a high level of artistic integrity

Language of instruction and examination

English and Norwegian

Teaching methods

Considerable independent practice and artistic work with the student's master's project. There will be individual instrumental instruction and supervision of the master's project.

  • Portfolio consisting of: programme notes from the midway performance
  • Reflection texts, and other artistic documentation of the master's project by agreement with the teacher
  • Midway performance in the form of a concert or equivalent artistic format (approx. 40 minutes)
  • Programme notes for the final performance exam

Re-sit examination

Students who do not pass the previous ordinary examination can gain access to a re-sit examination.
