Norwegian Language Courses and Programmes – Campus Tromsø

🗣️ Learn Norwegian at UiT
UiT offers a range of Norwegian language and literature courses at basic, intermediate, and advanced levels. These courses are designed to help international students and employees improve their Norwegian skills for everyday life, studies, and work.
📘 Norwegian courses for enrolled students and foreign employees (Levels A1, A2, B1 – 0 ECTS)
These non-credit courses are available only to:
- International students enrolled at UiT Tromsø
- Foreign employees at UiT Tromsø
Note: Family members of students or employees cannot participate.
🏫 Course details:
- Level A1: Introductory – Part 1
- Level A2: Introductory – Part 2
- Level B1: Intermediate
- Courses run for one full semester and are held on campus in Tromsø
- No online or hybrid options available

📚 Advanced Norwegian – Level III (20 ECTS)
This advanced course is designed for international students aiming to:
- Apply for Norwegian-taught degree programmes at UiT.
- Document Norwegian language skills for work or further studies.
- Incoming exchange students who study Norwegian or Scandinavian languages at their home institution and come from a university with an exchange agreement with the Department of Language and Culture at UiT.
It corresponds to Level B2/C1 in the CEFR and prepares students for the Bergenstest (Test i norsk – høyere nivå).
🧾 Course structure:
Level III consists of two parallel courses:
- NOR-0035: Written Norwegian for International Students
- NOR-0036: Oral Norwegian for International Students
Also available as a one-year programme:
Courses are offered in both autumn and spring semesters.
📌 Important notes:
- Admission is highly competitive; a qualifying entrance exam is held at the start of each semester.
- Admission does not grant a student visa or residence permit extension.
- Applicants with advanced Norwegian skills (e.g. Bergenstest) will not be prioritised.

- Norwegian Higher Education Entrance Qualification
- Passed entrance exam (held approx. 2 weeks before semester start)
- Recommended: Norwegian Level II proficiency

📖 Single courses in Scandinavian Languages and Literature
UiT also offers specialised bachelor-level courses in Scandinavian languages and literature for international students who study these subjects at their home university.
🧑🎓 Course features:
- Taught in Norwegian, alongside Norwegian students.
- International students are exempt from the “nynorsk” requirement.
- Exam evaluation is adapted to international students’ background.
- Look for courses with NOR-code in the UiT Course Catalogue.
🎓 Bachelor’s Programme in Nordic Language and Literature (180 ECTS)
This programme is primarily intended for native Norwegian speakers. Applicants must demonstrate fluency in both bokmål and nynorsk.
In exceptional cases, exchange or guest students may be admitted.
