To apply for an exchange programme at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, follow these steps:

  1. Contact your home institution – Reach out to the exchange coordinator or International Office at your university to check whether an exchange or study abroad agreement exists with UiT.

  2. Get nominated – If an agreement is in place, ask your exchange coordinator or International Office to nominate you for exchange at UiT.

  3. Start your application – Once nominated, you will receive an email from UiT inviting you to begin your application by submitting the required documents.

  • Autumn semester (August - December): START 15 MARCH - DEADLINE 15 APRIL.
  • Spring semester (January - June): START 15 SEPTEMBER - DEADLINE 15 OCTOBER.

FOR STUDENTS: APPLICATION SUBMISSION DEADLINES

  • Autumn semester (August - December): START 15 MARCH - DEADLINE 30 APRIL.
  • Spring semester (January - June): START 15 SEPTEMBER - DEADLINE 31 OCTOBER.

  • You must be nominated on a valid exchange agreement by your home university to come to UiT as an exchange student.
  • You must have received an invitation email from UiT to apply for a semester exchange.
  • You must currently be enrolled at your home university.
  • You must have a good command of English language at B2 or C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
  • You must be physically on-site and actively participate in courses and examinations. Applying only for online course modules does not qualify you for exchange status at UiT unless you are admitted to BIP (Blended Intensive Programme) or online microcourses.

To be eligible for exchange studies at UiT, you must demonstrate sufficient proficiency in English. This requirement applies to all applicants unless you meet one of the exemptions listed below.

Erasmus students from educational institutions in the EU, Türkiye, North Macedonia, Serbia and Liechtenstein

Erasmus+ students from European universities are not required to submit any document about English proficiency.


Nordic students with upper secondary school education in Finland, Faroe islands, Denmark, Greenland, Iceland and Sweden

You do not need to document any proof of English or Norwegian language proficiency if you have studied a Scandinavian language (Danish, Swedish, Norwegian) and English during your upper secondary school education.


Students from educational institutions in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK and the USA

You do not need to provide proof of English language proficiency if you are a native speaker or are primarily studying in English at your home higher educational institution.


For students coming from educational institutions in Africa (except for South Africa), Caucasus (Armenia and Georgia), China, Japan, Latin America, South Korea

Please ask your Exchange Coordinator or the International Office at your home educational institution to issue a Certificate/Letter/Document that indicates that you meet the English Language requirements (B2 or C1 levels in accordance with the CEFR framework.


Nordic students with upper secondary school education in Finland, Faroe islands, Denmark, Greenland, Iceland and Sweden

If you have upper secondary school qualifications granting general admission to higher education in your home country, and have studied in your native language (Danish and Sweden) at the most advanced level at upper secondary school, you are not required to take a Norwegian language proficiency test.

Other students

you must document your proficiency in Norwegian language if you are going to select courses taught in Norwegian.

For students coming from educational institutions in Africa (except for South Africa), Caucasus (Armenia and Gerogia), China, Japan, Latin America, South Korea

Please ask your Exchange Coordinator or the International Office at your home educational institution to issue a Certificate/Letter/Document that indicates that you meet the English Language requirements (B2 or C1 levels in accordance with the CEFR framework.


You can also submit an English test, but it is optional.

Please ensure that your test results are valid and not older than two years at the time of application.

  • TOEFL - Official score report: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 580 (paper-based)/ 240 (computer-based)/ 72 - 94 (Internet-based IBT) or higher. UiT TOEFL Institutional code: 0742.

  • IELTS - Academic test: International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) with a minimum of 6.5 - 7 points  or higher

  • PTE Academic: Pearson Test of English Academic with a minimum score of 62-75

  • APIEL: Advanced Placement International English Language Examination (APIEL) with a minimum of 3 points (Qualified) or 4 points (Well qualified).

  • The Michigan English Test (MET): with a minimum of 53-63 points

  • University of Cambridge Exams: Cambridge English First (FCE), Cambridge English First for Schools (FCE), Cambridge English Business Vantage (BEC Vantage).

  • TOEIC: 785-940
